I had the privilege of building Dave and Jen’s personal residence in Charleston, South Carolina. Looking back now, I realize it was one of the greatest honors of my career.

For builders—and really anyone in our industry—the thought of having a client on the jobsite every day is usually enough to make you want to run the other direction. More often than not, people get caught up in the individual trees and lose sight of the forest.

Dave was the exact opposite.

He wasn’t just accepted by every trade on site—he was genuinely welcomed. Every single day.

I’ve read so many people describe how Dave had the rare ability to make you feel like you were the only person in the room. That wasn’t reserved for boardrooms, clients, or industry leaders. It was who he was everywhere, including on a construction site.

My team was energized by his presence.

I would often arrive to find Dave deep in conversation with one of our craftsmen, discussing a design possibility, a construction method, or some ambitious new idea. The trades looked forward to the days he showed up because they couldn’t wait to share their progress or run another “crazy idea” by him—an idea he was almost always excited to explore.

In all my years building high-end homes, I have never met another client who was so universally respected and loved by every single person on a jobsite.

Dave spoke to the laborer sweeping the floors with the exact same respect that he showed the master craftsman installing custom casework or the design team obsessing over the smallest execution of detail. No one’s contribution was beneath his attention. No one was invisible.

He was the most genuine, kindhearted, and extraordinarily talented person and leader I have ever had the privilege of knowing.
